The Brothers

It was nothing out of the ordinary. The light poured through the windows and the well calculated glass angles evenly distributed light onto every desk. The room was bare, white and clean. Everything within the room was sterile; it had to be.

My eyes stayed focused onto the board, where Dr. Nogolak continued reading. The words from his mouth registered in my brain, stored as long term memory after a span of two seconds. With the exception of the constant and maintained breathing patterns that were always calm, collected and controlled, nothing moved. The only movement came from Dr. Nogolak, where the lesson was taught out of a book. Even though the room was silent, thoughts ran through our mind stream at the speed of lightning. Today is the day, for liberty…freedom.

The people in the complex knew us in every way possible – almost. We were bred like brothers, five of us. The next ‘perfect race’ is us, where emotion does not interfere with the right choices. Out intelligence exceeds anybody on the planet. They know every detail of us from the number of bones we have to our IQ level. We have everything that we need including perfect and calculated nutritious meals to recreational activities. They thought we would be happy, yet they were wrong. For six years we have been inside this complex and have never experienced the world. However much we have learnt about it, it will never satisfy our want for freedom. A complex on an isolated island is terrifying. Today was different; no longer are we going to prolong our wants. No longer were we going to wait. Today was the day. Be alert brothers…

The complex is heavily guarded by ex-marines, all here to be hired guns. We are a state of arts experiment, a world revolution. No one ever goes out, no one comes in. However, there is a change to our routine today. The grey gate is going to be opened for our next six year’s worth of supplies. A visit from the president is also going to happen. This is our chance, now or never. They may know everything about us, but they have not controlled us. They have made a fatal mistake. Our communication by mind is overwhelming. We can engage in conversations from incredible distances. We can plot against them.

A knock on the window abruptly stopped Dr. Nogolak from his reading. He looked up and signalled us to rise. The door swung open and men in suits came walking through. Our heads instinctively turned to study these men. They are bodyguards brothers, be careful. I searched harder and found the man who was distinctively dressed as the president. Target is in range. Dr. Nogolak welcomed the president and as they engaged into a conversation, our minds leapt into action. One and Two, bring down the body guards. I will personally go for the president. Everyone then move out into the foyer area.

Suddenly, chaos arose from the silent and unforgiving room. The closest bodyguards were flung onto the wall as my brothers blasted through and out the door. I lunged forward and tackled the president. In one fluent motion, I flung him onto my shoulders and carried him out of the room. Looking back, Dr. Nogolak looked at me furiously with tears running down his face. In his left hand he held a walkie-talkie. It only meant trouble.

Our hearts pumped with adrenalin as we sprinted down the hall way. Three, did you get him? There wasn’t time to answer as a hail of bullets slammed into the ground two metres away from us. I could feel the drumming of my heart and the fear of death closing in. However, my brain shut the emotion away. Running was the best option. I leapt forward and slid on my front side, sliding through the door way. Five shut the door immediately and checked that it was locked. A split second later, deafening roars echoed throughout the foyer as bullets slammed into the door. Nothing mattered; running was still the only option. We rushed into the elevator, jamming the close button just as the door to the foyer collapsed and masked men poured through. ‘Ding’ the elevator door closed. A relieved look spread across everyone’s face.

Suddenly, a red flashing light took us all by surprise. Looking up, the overload sign was flashing brightly. Immediately, Four leapt up and crawled out of the overhead hatch. As soon as the bullets started denting the elevator door, everyone followed his lead. The greased cable made it almost impossible to climb up. As soon as we cleared one floor, we forced open the elevator doors. Pouring through like ants, we scattered throughout the room. Get to the president’s helicopter! We sprinted out onto the landing pad, totally unaware of the dangers.

As soon as we came out of the door, it was like hell had just arrived. Two fell first, his head exploding into a cloud of red. Instinctively, I yanked the president in front and dived for cover. The others rolled behind nearby cars. We all felt the sudden jolt as one of our brothers was cut off from the mind stream. Fear and sadness were locked away as our minds concentrated on the situation at hand. Taking a quick glance, I could see a line of guards all crouched in front of the helicopter. Up above on the bridge, two guards holding sniper rifles were positioned on either end of the bridge. “Release the president now and walk out with your hands on your head!” My heart skipped a beat as I realised the voice was from Dr. Nogolak. I could see Four put his middle finger up, clearly stating his intention to Dr. Nogolak. To the truck, now! Holding onto the president, I pulled him inside the nearby truck. Looking down, I could see that the truck was still in ignition. As I turned back, I could see One already in the back of the truck looking for any useful items that he could use. Behind him was Five and Four, sprinting for their lives across the field. Five arrived first, jumping onto the back of the truck. As we all desperately looked at Four, we knew that time was about to run out. Without warning, the windshield exploded with glasses showering down onto the seats. Covered in glass, I hammered onto the accelerator. At the same time as when Four leapt for the truck, it accelerated away from him, causing him to collapse back on the ground. Without the cover from the truck, Four was exposed. A moment later, another jolt could be felt in the mind stream.

The truck snaked left and right, avoiding enemy fire from all directions as bullets rained down on it. “Three, check the glove box!” With one hand on the steering wheel, I opened up the glove box. Peering into it, I could see a pistol and a torch in it. Immediately, I hooked them both to my belt. There was no way we could get out of this. The impossible must be made possible.

Slamming the brakes down, three figures could be seen flying out. Landing beside the helicopter, Five opened the door to the helicopter, only to be met with a bullet in his brain as the pilot opened fire from his pistol. With a reflexive reaction, I put two bullets into the pilot. One clambered into the cockpit as all firing ceased. The gun was now facing the president, and everyone could see that I had no hesitation to pull the trigger. Closing the helicopter door, One drove the helicopter off the Island.

As I gazed over the blue ocean, I experienced my first taste of freedom. It had come at a huge price. It was not as we predicted. Three, we have been locked on. Looking behind, I could see a rocket and its smoky trail coming towards us. It didn’t matter anymore. The loss brought sorrow that could never be mourned for as our bodies held back every emotion. We had everything when we were inside the complex. Now, all is lost. Even the most perfect human being can make mistakes. Farewell One. As One attempted to wave, the world exploded into a brilliant white light.
